Tanger Med Port Complex Surpasses 95% Capacity, Handling 8.6 Million Containers in 2023

Record-Breaking Performance Sets New Standards in Maritime Excellence

The Tanger Med Port Complex, strategically located in the northern region of Tanger, has achieved a remarkable milestone by reaching 95% of its operational capacity in 2023. Throughout the year, the port processed a staggering 8.6 million containers, showcasing a substantial 13.4% increase from the previous year, surpassing the projected target set for 2027.

The overall tonnage of handled goods reached 122 million tons, marking a significant 13.6% surge compared to 2022. This figure stands as the highest recorded volume in the Strait of Gibraltar and the Mediterranean, constituting over half of the total tonnage of Moroccan ports. Notably, it surpassed Algeciras, which handled 104.7 million tons and 4,733,385 containers in the past year.

In an official press release disseminated by the port administration on Tuesday, Tanger Med attributed this success to the exemplary performance of its terminals and the achieved productivity, which exceeded an impressive 800,000 containers monthly.

Truck traffic also experienced growth in 2023, marking a 4.1% increase from the previous year with nearly 478,000 units. This growth was primarily fueled by the rise in industrial products, effectively compensating for the decline in agricultural products.

Furthermore, the traffic of new vehicles exhibited a notable 21% upswing, totaling over 578,000 units. Of these, more than 341,000 were exported by Renault (EPA:RENA) factories in Melloussa, on the outskirts of Tanger, and Somaca in Casablanca. Additionally, over 176,000 units were exported by Stellantis in Kenitra, north of Rabat.

Passenger traffic returned to pre-COVID-19 levels, with 2.7 million travelers, reflecting a substantial 30% increase compared to 2022.

The maritime traffic also witnessed an uptick of 17%, accommodating 16,900 vessels, including 1,113 mega-ships exceeding 290 meters in length. The Tanger Med Port Complex stands as a testament to its pivotal role in the maritime sector and its commitment to efficiency and growth in the region.
