Wärtsilä’s Innovative Fuel System Marks Milestone in Decarbonizing Maritime Industry


Exmar LPG, in collaboration with South Korea’s Hyundai Mipo Dockyard, is spearheading a groundbreaking initiative in the maritime sector with the construction of two medium gas carrier newbuildings. These vessels are set to revolutionize oceangoing shipping by integrating Wärtsilä Gas Solutions’ cutting-edge Ammonia Fuel Supply Systems (AFSS), marking a historic milestone as the first-ever ships of their kind to feature dual-fuel engines capable of utilizing ammonia as a primary source of propulsion.

The AFSS, developed by Wärtsilä, represents a paradigm shift in fuel technology for the maritime industry. Tailored for both liquid and gaseous fuel applications, this innovative system is designed for seamless integration into newbuilds or retrofits on existing vessels. Specifically engineered to meet the rigorous demands of ships engaged in transporting liquefied gas, including very large (VLGC) and medium gas carriers (MGC), the AFSS ensures optimal performance while adhering to the International Code of Safety for Ships Using Gases or Other Low-flashpoint Fuels (IGF Code).

Comprising meticulously crafted components such as filters, pumps, and heat exchangers, the AFSS guarantees a steady and reliable fuel supply to the engine, maintaining precise pressure and temperature parameters throughout operation. Wärtsilä’s extensive expertise in ammonia handling, accumulated over more than 50 years, underscores the robustness and reliability of the system, even under the most adverse sea conditions.
