Monjasa, in conjunction with Fuel & Marine Oil Corp (FAMOIL), has successfully executed a pioneering biofuel supply operation in South America, marking a significant milestone in the maritime industry. The delivery, totaling 510 tonnes of B30 marine biofuels, took place at the port of Callao, Peru, targeting the Cargill operated dry bulk carrier, Infinity Sky.

This historic undertaking represents the inaugural ISCC-certified biofuels provision along the Pacific Coast of South America, ushering in the advent of a scalable 2nd generation marine biofuels supply chain. Collaboratively developed with FAMOIL, this innovative and sustainable framework boasts a monthly capacity ranging from 12,000 to 15,000 tonnes, laying the foundation for robust biofuel distribution networks in the region.

The biofuel blend deployed for this inaugural supply operation comprised 30% Fatty Acid Methyl Ester (FAME) and 70% Very Low Sulphur Fuel Oil (VLSFO), ensuring compliance with industry standards and environmental regulations.

This groundbreaking initiative extends Monjasa’s biofuels footprint beyond its established operations in Cartagena, Colombia, exemplifying the company’s proactive stance towards adapting to the evolving marine fuels landscape. As the nascent marine biofuels markets gradually gain traction, Monjasa is actively engaged in discussions with numerous shipowners and operators to facilitate both ad-hoc and contractual biofuel supplies in Peru, leveraging the strategic significance of the Port of Callao.

Jonas Bruslund, Trading Director at Monjasa, underscored the pivotal role of partnerships in driving industry transformation, stating, “Based on our daily conversations with customers, we expect to see more shipowners moving from biofuels trial runs to more regular supplies – and making these fuels more broadly available is the first step of that development. We are all on a steep learning curve and we would like to thank our partners on this first supply operation, FAMOIL and Cargill, who have contributed significantly to reaching this milestone.”

The establishment of this new second-generation biofuels supply chain is a testament to the collaborative efforts of FAMOIL and Monjasa in delivering a comprehensive solution tailored to diverse shipowner preferences. Embracing a multifaceted approach, this partnership accommodates varying biofuel blends, encompassing both VLSFO and HSFO-based formulations, in addition to the availability of pure biodiesel B100, thereby catering to the evolving needs of the maritime industry.
