Port of Houston Advances Sustainability with Hybrid-Electric Cranes

New RTGs Reduce Emissions by 90%, Supporting 2050 Carbon Neutrality Goal

The Port of Houston has recently taken delivery of six new hybrid-electric rubber-tired gantry cranes (RTGs), marking a significant step towards its goal of achieving carbon neutrality by 2050. This latest shipment brings the total number of new RTGs acquired by the port to 26 since December 2023. These cranes have been deployed at the Barbours Cut and Bayport container terminals, bolstering the port’s capabilities and environmental credentials. This delivery is the fourth of five scheduled for this year, underscoring the port’s aggressive push to modernize its equipment fleet.

Hybrid-electric RTGs, as opposed to conventional diesel-powered cranes, offer substantial environmental benefits. They significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions, noise pollution, and fuel consumption. Specifically, these cranes cut emissions of nitrogen oxides (NOx), particulate matter (PM), hydrocarbons (HC), and carbon monoxide (CO) by an impressive 90% compared to their diesel counterparts. The integration of advanced hybrid technology enables these cranes to combine the operational efficiency and versatility of battery power with the reliable performance of diesel engines, thereby minimizing their environmental footprint.

Roger Guenther, Executive Director of the Port of Houston, expressed enthusiasm about the new additions: “We are delighted to incorporate these hybrid-electric RTGs into our fleet. This investment demonstrates our commitment to sustainable growth and our leadership in driving the maritime industry towards greener equipment.”

The port anticipates the arrival of an additional batch of RTGs in the fourth quarter of this year. By the end of 2024, 57 of the 147 RTGs at the Barbours Cut and Bayport container terminals will be hybrid-electric, illustrating the port’s steady progress towards its sustainability targets.

Historically, the port sector has been a significant contributor to global emissions, primarily due to the heavy reliance on diesel-powered machinery. However, recent years have seen a paradigm shift, with ports worldwide investing in greener technologies to mitigate their environmental impact. The Port of Rotterdam, for example, has been a pioneer in this area, having introduced a fleet of electric and hybrid vehicles and cranes as part of its broader sustainability strategy. The Port of Houston’s initiatives are part of a broader global trend towards decarbonizing the maritime industry. The International Maritime Organization (IMO) has set ambitious targets to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from international shipping by at least 50% by 2050 compared to 2008 levels. To achieve these goals, ports and shipping companies are increasingly adopting innovative technologies and operational practices.

The introduction of hybrid-electric RTGs at the Port of Houston not only aligns with global sustainability goals but also enhances the port’s operational efficiency.
